In the century preceding World War I, the American Middle West drew thousands of migrants both from Europe and from the northeastern United States. In the American mind, the region represented a place where social differences could be muted and a distinctly American culture created. Many of the European groups, however, viewed the Midwest as an area of opportunity because it allowed them to retain cultural and religious traditions from their homelands.Jon Gjerde examines the cultural patterns, or "minds," that those settling the Middle West carried with them. He argues that such cultural transplantation could occur because patterns of migration tended to reunite people of similar pasts and because the rural Midwest was a vast region where cultural groups could sequester themselves in tight-knit settlements built around familial and community institutions. Gjerde compares patterns of development and acculturation across immigrant groups, exploring the frictions and fissures experienced within and between communities. Finally, he examines the means by which individual ethnic groups built themselves a representative voice, joining the political and social debate on both a regional and national level.

Rates of emigration from Norway were relatively high & rates of remigration were relatively low. Yet, we should not discount the influence of returning emigrants & ideas on Norway. Indeed, this article suggests that a large emigration even without a large return migration is adequate to place its imprint on the homeland. As two locales of permanence, what we might call two "nations," were developing in Norway & the Americas, their economies & cultures were both influenced by the other. Norwegian Americans used their common Norwegian past to create an ethnic institutional structure most notably in the US. Simultaneously, the people of Norway were influenced not only by the remigration of some one-sixth of the emigrants, but also by capital from & images of America. Whether they had emigrated or not, Norwegians used these images to foster their economy & imagine changes in relations of social class, reform movements, religious institutions, & their sense of nation. 2 Tables. L'émigration de millions de personnes d'Europe vers les Etats-Unis a eu de graves conséquences, tant pour les pays de départ que pour ceux d'arrivée. Jusqu'à présent les scientifiques ont généralement analysé l'immigration soit du point de vue du lieu de départ, soit du point de vue du lieu d'arrivée ; très peu de travaux ont étudié les schémas de la migration elle- même ou les adaptations démographiques des migrants pénétrant dans un nouvel environnement économique et culturel. Cet article étudie deux populations de migrants ayant quitté la Norvège pour les Etats-Unis et révèle que les migrations en chaîne ont conduit à la formation de colonies peuplées de migrants d'origine commune qui ont entre eux des liens très étroits. Comme on pouvait s'y attendre ces migrants ont reproduit le comportement démographique de leur lieu d'origine : la fertilité dans le mariage est restée élevée, la structure familiale complète et les conceptions prénuptiales largement répandues . Cependant au cours des quarante dernières années, la fertilité des couples mariés a décru et les familles nucléaires augmentées des familles à un seul parent sont devenues la règle. Les phénomènes de modification démographique subis par ces immigrants correspondent donc à une complexe interaction de continuité et de changement.

The image of the "backward" immigrant has enjoyed a prominent place in American history, in large part because of the perceived "non-American" fertility behavior of many immigrant groups. The European perspective on these migrants, however, has been to see them as innovators, breaking free from the demographic constraints of the Old World. Drawing upon a large sample of reconstituted Norwegian immigrant families, this article examines the rising and then declining fertility of this group over the second half of the nineteenth century. It concludes that their fertility experience was influenced both by cultural tenacity and economic opportunity.

This paper concerns optimal emissions of greenhouse gases when catastrophic consequences are possible. A numerical model is presented which takes into account both continuous climate-feedback damages as well as the possibility of a catastrophic outcome. The uncertainty in the model concerns whether or not a future catastrophe will occur. However, the welfare losses imposed by such an outcome are assumed known to the decision-maker. An important result is that the possibility of a climate catastrophe is a major argument for greenhouse gas abatement even in absence of continuous damage. Special attention is given to analyses on the probability of a catastrophe and the pure rate of time preferences, and the implicit values of these parameters are calculated if the Rio stabilisation target is assumed to be optimal. Finally, the expected value of perfect information about the probability of the arrival of a catastrophe is estimated.
